Perhaps no one will argue with the fact that waterproof fabric has many uses and is quite useful. This includes waterproof clothing and shoes, and other items, for example, a waterproof case for gadgets. But in the case of waterproof fabric, you can do without a store. So you will save money and improve the existing thing.

There is one old, simple and working way - special impregnation. Previously, sails for crowned heads were impregnated with it, but now it is used to impregnate suits and tents.
You will need:
- laundry soap;
- potassium alum;
- water
For impregnation, you will need to prepare two compositions, the first of them is soap. To do this, take 75 g of laundry soap, finely chop or rub it, and then boil it in 1 liter of hot water until it is completely dissolved.

The second composition is even simpler - it is a solution of potassium alum. To do this, dissolve 50 g of alum in 1 liter of water. That's it, the preparatory stage is over.

Now we take the fabric that we want to make waterproof, and dip it in hot soapy water, let it soak well, and then dry it completely. Next, we put the cloth with the dried out first layer into the alum solution, let it soak well, and then dry it completely. The procedure with the second solution can be repeated twice. Done, you can experiment.

When potassium alum interacts with soap, a kind of water-insoluble soap is obtained. Such impregnation is also good in that it envelops the fibers of the fabric, and leaves the space between them free. Due to this, the fabric becomes waterproof, but at the same time allows air to pass through, which is just great for clothes and shoes.
By the way, this waterproofing technique also works on paper.

And below you can watch a detailed video on how to make any fabric waterproof using this ancient method.
