When we think about the nature of the North, a not welcoming picture, covered with ice and snow, rises before our eyes. Add to this subzero temperatures and frosty winds - then you get a reliable picture of the northern icy latitudes of our Earth. Given this, most people believe that it is impossible to live beyond the Arctic Circle. However, this is not at all the case! And one family comfortably settled into a self-built house that can withstand the most extreme weather conditions in the north.

This is how the cold, not hospitable Arctic Circle is designated

And one family built here a warm and very comfortable house for life not far from the icy desert, in the far corners of Norway.

Striking futuristic structure in the middle of … wasteland

If you happen to be in the Sandhornøy mountain island area of Nordland, Norway one day, you will find the home of the Hjertefølger family - a stunning comfortable dome house.

The family has been living in a three-story house with a glass dome since 2013

Inside the futuristic "space station" everything is made of organic materials: sand, water, clay, wood, etc.

This is an adobe building

Not only is the solar dome surrounding it functionally useful, it is also aesthetically pleasing.

The house looks like a giant snow globe, only with snow outside

It has five bedrooms and two bathrooms.

There is also a rustic-style living room

A glass dome protects the house from heavy snowfall, wind and cold outside.

There are quite a few rooms inside

Surprisingly, there is even a small garden with a vegetable garden under the dome.

The family grows their own organic vegetables

Benjamin and Ingrid Hjertefølger grow apples, squash, pumpkin, cherries, cucumbers, melons, carrots, apricots, tomatoes, grapes, kiwis and lots and lots of greens.

Amazing: a green corner in a corner of the Earth that does not see sunlight for three months a year

The interior is cozy and welcoming. It is hard to believe that beyond the walls of this house is the Arctic Circle …

… if not for the stunning views from the window

The family truly enjoys the delightful northern landscape every day.

It's a sight worth waiting for

“We love our home. He has his own soul. It was a revelation for us that during the period when we were building the house, we, imperceptibly to ourselves, rebuilt ourselves. It was as if we were born again, became different people”.

“The very process of building a house has changed us, made us better,” says Ingrid

“Our home is incredible. We ourselves were amazed at how organic, cozy and warm it turned out."

Living in a house like no other …

“There is a unique atmosphere here. It is very quiet inside the house. I can even hear this silence! It is hard to explain. But I think it would be impossible to get the same feeling from a house that someone else would build instead of us."
