On a sunny day, you often want to dine in the fresh air, surrounded by lush green grass, cheerful singing of birds and the gentle touches of the rays of the warm sun! A picnic for this is a wonderful opportunity! It can be arranged by the sea or river after swimming, just when the appetite wakes up!

So, what am I for? Recently I saw bags and backpacks for a picnic on sale, and I sooo wanted to … So I decided to experiment on three pairs of my husband's jeans? and those materials that I had at home at that time, so I will immediately make a reservation that I will replace some professionally used materials, so to speak, with what I had, but I will write what should really be used! And I will share with you what happened! I decided that the backpack would be more comfortable, so we will sew it!

What we need:

  • size 52 jeans - 3 pairs or Cordur or Oxford fabric - 1 linear meter (they are just used to sew such backpacks, and Oxford is lighter, but less durable than Cordura);
  • lining fabric (I took a water-repellent one);
  • foam rubber 1 cm thick, can be replaced with izolon or 3 layers of substrate under the laminate;
  • zippers 76 cm - 2 pcs. and 20 cm - 1 pc.;
  • oblique inlay - 2 m and lace - 4 m (in my case), you can and should have a keeper tape - 6 m;
  • strong synthetic threads (polyamide, nylon);
  • buttons-rivets for jeans - 4 pcs., I have it, but we need legs for bags (bullets) the same amount;
  • elastic band 3 cm thick - 1.5 m;
  • round thin elastic band - 1 m,
  • tips - 2 pcs.,
  • clamp - 1 pc.;
  • sling 3 cm wide - 1.5 m;
  • single-slot and double-slot plastic buckle 3 cm - 2 pcs. each;
  • and a sewing machine, scissors, chalk, a pattern, inspiration will also come in handy!

Let's start … The first step is to make a pattern!

Image
Image

We need:

  • detail of the front and back walls of the backpack 30 × 40 cm (with a rounded top) made of jeans - 2 pcs., from lining fabric - 2 pcs, from foam rubber - 1 pc (less by 1 cm on each side);
  • details of the botan 74 × 13 cm and 74 × 16 cm from jeans, 1 piece each (I did this, but I recommend duplicating them with non-woven or dublerin, which I did not have and also sew a lining to them (this is correct), which I also did not, and generally did not regret it;
  • detail of the front outer pocket 25 × 25 cm (with rounding of all corners) from jeans - 1 piece, from lining fabric - 2 pieces;
  • details of a botan for a pocket 74 × 7 cm and 74 × 3 cm from jeans 1 pc. (I also recommend duplicating and sewing on the lining, I again did not do it);
  • detail of the bottom of the backpack 54 × 16 cm from jeans and lining, 1 pc.; - detail of the bottom of the backpack 28 × 15 cm made of foam rubber - 1 piece;
  • handle detail 25 × 17 cm from jeans 1pc.; - details of the inner patch pocket 20 × 24 cm and 20 × 4 cm on one of the lining fabric;
  • details of jeans straps mirrored in 2 pieces, from foam rubber mirrored in 1 piece;
  • parts for fastening a single-slot buckle on both sides of the lower part of the back (triangles) - 2 pcs.

Next, take jeans and cut them this way (2 pairs).

Image
Image

Now we will place a pattern on them and circle all the necessary details described above, with an allowance of 1 cm.

Image
Image

Digression: in order to quickly circle a pattern with an allowance, just take 2 crayons together and outline all the details: both quickly and the allowance is the same everywhere, I note that it is more convenient to do this with long crayons!

Image
Image

Then we cut out all the details.

The front and back walls of the backpack are cut in such a way that the side seam of the jeans is exactly in the center of each of them.

I cut out the detail of the front wall of the bulky patch pocket from the part of the jeans, which had the back pocket, it will additionally be possible to put some little things in it.

The details of the nerd were cut from the legs of the second pair of jeans.

Image
Image

Details made of foam rubber and lining, here is a detail of the back lining already with a pocket, below it will be described how I sewed it.

Image
Image

I wanted the compartment with crockery and cutlery to be "fun", so a colored raincoat fabric was taken to lining the same part, more precisely, the remains … One flap was enough for a whole part, and the other was made from 4 different squares. I just sewed 2 squares in pairs. I connected the seams with a pin to perfectly match the center. I sewed it on, ironed it, it turned out like this.

Image
Image

I cut out a detail from them, it will be attached to the front of the backpack.

Image
Image

I will place an elastic band on this part in 2 rows, between which the distance is 4.5 cm:

  • the lower strip will hold single cutlery (I write single ones, because at the top there will be a compartment for complex cutlery, we have a fork-spoon-knife for hiking) and glasses, according to my calculations, based on the volume of glasses, I divide the length of the gum in this way 2 -16.5-2-2-2-2-16.5-2 cm, and the length of the part is so 2-6.5-2-2-2-2-16.5-2 cm;
  • the upper strip holds complex cutlery, a salt shaker and a pepper shaker, and again, having tried on your objects, the division of the length of the gum turned out to be 10.5-12-12-10.5 cm, and the length of the part 3.5-9-9-3.5 cm.

We will sew this detail to the front of the backpack, according to the markings, having previously tucked the allowances inward and ironed them, we will also sew the lines marked on the elastic directly to the denim part, so that the lining does not sag under the weight of the devices.

We get the following result.

Image
Image
Image
Image

Now we will sew the plate holders onto the second part of the lining, for this I took a ready-made part from the suspenders of the ski suit, I still don’t wear it, even though I use it! We place it in such a way that it is in the center of the part, cut off the excess and pin it with pins, it turned out like this.

Image
Image

Digression: whoever does not have such a part, take an elastic band or a sling 15 cm long - 4 pcs. + 1 cm allowance, sew on the ends in pairs a 2x2 cm Velcro (it consists of 2 layers), place the elastic bands on the side that is not Velcro, in the middle of each side of the part (that is, on 4 sides) so that if the opposite elastic bands are connected, they grappled in the middle, it turns out that the plates will hold on from 4 sides.

We connect the lining with the cymbal holders along the edge with the main part of the pocket from the wrong side to the wrong side.

Now we will sew a botan pocket, for this we place a zipper between the two parts, by the way, at this stage you should duplicate these details for rigidity and strength and sew a zipper between the lining and the part, there will be a sandwich: the part of the lining is face up - the zipper is face up - the part of the nerd is face down, stitching, turning away, ironing, stitching again on the face, and so both parts … It should be that way, and I have a backpack for myself, I will not carry the weight, I did not do this and just sewed the zipper to the nerd's detail face to face, turned it back, stitched it again, and so on from both sides.

Image
Image

It turned out to be a pocket nerd.

Now we connect it on both sides with the bottom of the pocket, sew it face to face.

We will close these seams with a bias tape, I took an orange one, to support the color of the lining.

Image
Image

Then we connect the front of the pocket with the ready-made nerd face to face, for this we mark with chalk the middle lines on the part and the bot, fix it with pins, and then in a circle, it should turn out exactly without assemblies. Sew along the line from the side of the botan, since the stitching is smoother on a flat surface.

Image
Image

We place the finished pocket along the contour of the sewn lining, also combining the middle lines, pin it with pins or sweep it, and sew it on!

Image
Image

Thus, on the outside, everything is beautiful and neat, but inside we still need to process the seams, for which you can use a keeper tape or, like me, an oblique inlay … We attach it on both sides of the cut, and the lower part should be slightly longer, and sew in a circle on both sides. That's neat inside.

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

Now we sew a lining on this front part of the backpack from the seamy side along the edge, and this part is ready.

Now we will prepare the bottom of the backpack, place a piece of foam rubber on the denim part in the middle and stitch it crosswise.

Image
Image

Then we will install the legs, I have rivets, as it turned out to be a very successful replacement for bulbs! Let's make the markup so that everything is even, I set aside 12 cm from the center in 4 directions. We fasten the rivets with a hammer, and you're done!

Image
Image

Now we will sew the lining face to face along the edge.

Now we will sew the botan of the backpack in the same way as we sewed it for the pocket (I remind you that it is advisable to duplicate and sew the lining, but how, I described above) with only one amendment, I want the zipper to be closed, and for this we use about The smallest detail I have is 3 cm initially wider.I will explain the sequence of work: first, we sew a narrow detail of the botan to the zipper face to face, fold it back, sew it again. Then we will also sew the second (wide) part to the zipper face to face, and bend it so that the zipper remains covered, for this we need the extra 3 cm, and sew from above as usual.

Image
Image

Now let's connect the botan and the bottom face to face on both sides, I don't have a photo of this stage, but here everything is exactly the same as when sewing a pocket, and I processed the cuts with synthetic double-sided lace (this is what I replaced the bias tape with), but it is better, as I mentioned, to use keeper tape.

Let's prepare the back with straps. Let's take a piece from jeans, make markings on the front side. According to the markings, we will sew a denim piece with foam rubber.

Image
Image

Let's take care of the straps, for convenience we will cut out the details from the one-piece trousers, they will turn out to be the same, and time will be saved. Cut out the same 2 mirror parts from foam rubber, but less by 1 cm on each side.

Image
Image

On the foam parts we will make a simple marking - a straight line every 5 cm. Along these lines we will connect the foam and denim parts of both shoulder straps.

Image
Image

Then, along the marked line, face to face, we sew the details with and without foam rubber. And turn it out, the base of the straps is ready.

Image
Image

We will make a loop from a 7 cm section of the sling, and we will pass a double-slotted buckle into it by the upper edge, secure with a pin. We will thread a 50 cm section of the slings with one end into the same buckle, only in the middle, and fix it with a pin in the same way. Sew it.

Image
Image

For triangles, bend the side 14 cm, lay a line. Fold them in half, and put a loop with a single-slot buckle inside, sew, the details are ready.

Image
Image

Sew the resulting designs to the straps by the loop attached to the upper part of the buckle.

Image
Image

We fold the handle detail on the 17 cm side to the middle on both sides, and then in half, and sew on both sides, the handle is ready.

Image
Image

We will unplug 6 loops from the jeans, on which the belt is held, and folding in half, distribute 3 of them into the right seam of the back at a distance of 7 cm from each other, and mirror the remaining 3 into the left seam of the front wall of the backpack, fix them with a stitch along the edge. Distribute the resulting details on the back of the backpack, sweep or pin them.

Image
Image

There will be a patch pocket on the lining of the back of the backpack. Sew to the zipper from both sides, face to face, along a piece of lining fabric, with a width equal to the width of the zipper.

Image
Image

And also, face to face, we will sew two details of the pocket to the zipper, bend it, iron it.

Image
Image

Sew the lower part of the pocket face to face with a lining, and then bend the pocket in the opposite direction, leaving 2 cm, and sew it along the contour, after folding the edges inward, the bottom will turn out to be slightly convex, not flat, which will make the pocket more spacious.

Image
Image

Join the back and lining with a pocket from the wrong side to the wrong side along the edge.

Image
Image

All the components are ready, we connect the same along the marks, the back and the botan face to face, we sweep it, or, as in my case, we fix it with pins.

Image
Image

We sew, paying special attention to the places where we sew in the straps, handle, loops and triangles with a sling. In the same way, we will sew the front wall, do not forget to open the zipper! We process the seams with lace.

Image
Image
Image
Image

We turn out the backpack, straighten all the seams.

Connect the top and bottom of the straps. We will pass the end of the sling into the single-slot buckle, bend it up and pass it into the lower hole of the double-slot buckle. Then into its upper hole. And again we will thread it into a single-slot buckle. Done, just pull the ends of the straps and the straps will tighten. And so that they do not fall out, the ends must be tucked up and hemmed.

Image
Image
Image
Image

It remains to lace up the loops obtained from one of the sides with an elastic band, insert both ends into the clamp and put on the limit switches. You can put a small blanket or towel folded into a roll under this lacing, and the elastic will hold it very tightly.

I have not photographed this moment, but the purpose will be visible in the final photos.

Our picnic backpack is ready

I want to note that the main compartment of the backpack can be made heat-resistant, for this, separately from the isolon with a silver coating, cut out all the same parts, except for the details of the pocket, 1 piece each. and glue them from the inside (with a silver coating inside) with aluminum tape (it is also silver), we also glue the zipper to the details of the botan, but so that it opens from the side where there is no silver coating, that is, outside of our bag (although you can sew, isolon is easily stitched). You will get a full-fledged bag with an insulating coating inside. We put it in the main compartment, and you can put cool food and drinks, it is advisable to put a cold accumulator on the bottom, then the food will keep cool longer, without it, as practice shows, no more than 1-1.5 hours.
