Many gardeners-gardeners, having once seen a beautiful flowering of a rose on a stem, lose peace and sleep, and all their thoughts are formulated into a single desire - I want a standard rose.
How does she win hearts, and what makes some summer residents give up their desire to grow a standard rose?
The luxury of flowering a standard rose
An unusual standard rose tree is not a bush. It is interesting, cost-effective, compact, decorative.
Standard roses bloom profusely and for a long time; their flowers are located high - it is convenient to admire their beauty and enjoy the aroma.
Grafted on the stems of frost-resistant rose hips, they winter well.
Located high above the ground, the crown of the rose is well ventilated and, without getting into the humid layer of air, becomes more resistant to diseases such as powdery mildew, black spot, and rust.
Rosehip stem with a powerful root system provides the rose with good nutrition, which affects its luxurious flowering.
How to grow a stem
Seeds are extracted from ripe (orange-red) rose hips. In late September - early October, they are stratified in sand in a refrigerator, in November - January they are sown in open ground or in a box, which is placed under snow. The next fall, seedlings are selected for future boles and planted in a specially prepared place. Only in the third year, 1 strong shoot is left, on which in the spring (late April - early May) 2 eyes are inoculated from different sides (you can graft a red and white rose on one stem).
A healthy stem with an already grafted rose in spring
The cultivation process can be "omitted" if you buy a ready-made stem in the nursery. The best rootstock is a dog rose or rose (Roscanin'Schmidts Ideal ',' Pfanders') with a strong root system, a straight trunk, no thorns, winter-hardy, disease-resistant, with good survival rate with a scion.
After successful inoculation and with the start of shoot growth, the stem is tied to a peg. In the future, make sure that the support reaches the level of the crown. Otherwise, the bole will lean to the ground under its weight, especially after rains.
Planting a standard rose
We plant in May, when warm weather sets in and the soil warms up to + 10 ° С.
We do not deepen the root collar, it makes no sense.
We immediately install the peg (flush with the grafting site or 2 cm below it), stepping back 10-15 cm from the stem.
Tie the rose stump in 2-3 places with a soft twine in the "eight" method.
Before spring planting in central Russia and to the north (in the southern regions, autumn planting is preferable), carefully examine the scion of the standard rose and, if necessary, carry out sanitary pruning, removing dead dry shoots.
Caring for a standard rose
During the growing season, shoots are promptly removed at the base of the stem and on the stem.
It consists in the formation and maintenance of the crown of a standard rose in the form of a bowl.
In this case, the one-year growth is cut by ½ (the cut is made above the kidney facing the center), the rest is shortened by 3-5 buds. All sections are treated with a special disinfectant garden paint.
Processing of sections with special paint
During the growth of ground cover and climbing roses on high boles, to obtain weeping forms, we remove the vertically growing shoots and shorten the rest that go beyond the desired contour.
In miniature roses on low boles, every spring we cut off the shoots by ½.
Every year at the beginning of the growth of shoots with a complete mineral fertilizer.
Digging on a shovel bayonet in the fall. Loosening the soil after watering.
