Do you need to renovate an attic with a non-standard layout? What tricks and techniques to use to create a cozy and functional space? We decided to consider this on the example of a small apartment from Barcelona
Given the design features, repairs in the attic are difficult to do. But with the right approach, the result will exceed your expectations.
Increasingly, attics are used as living quarters. Here is a real-life example of an attic apartment that measures only 20 square meters. It is located in the center of Barcelona (Spain).
You will not roam too much in such a small space, especially when you need to include in it all the functions necessary for a full life. But when a professional gets down to business, then anything is possible. Let's see how designer Anthony Chevallier coped with this task.
Color: expands boundaries and adds mood
When choosing a color for such a non-standard room, it was important to maintain a cheerful mood. It is especially important when a young student lives in it (as we assume).
Before the renovation, the main color of the apartment was yellow. It is often used in the attic. It invigorates, has a positive effect on intellectual thinking and improves mood. But since the space includes several functions (work and rest), it was necessary to find a middle ground.
So, the designer chose the light color of the walls and ceiling as the basis. And yellow added as an accent. The result is the effect of sun rays. In the bedroom, they did not use such a technique so that the room was set up for relaxation.
- Light, without visual boundaries, the color of walls, ceilings, furniture visually increases the space, therefore it is ideal for an attic with a non-standard design.
How to add expressiveness
To make the apartment look expressive, Anthony Chevalier used several effective techniques. He made accents with color and light.
Moreover, the impression of airiness was achieved thanks to the backlight. In the bedroom, it is hidden under the ceiling; diffused lighting sets you up for relaxation. In the living room, the lighting is brighter and gives expressiveness to the items on the shelves, enhances the sunny mood. In the kitchen, it is even brighter and serves as an additional source of lighting.
Decorative pillows, furniture covers also suitably match the color and create a cheerful mood in the apartment.
Functionality comes first in small spaces. The kitchenette in the attic becomes slightly larger when the table is folded down. Its surface is specially selected in light gray so that it does not stand out too much.
The size of the table is small, but if someone comes to visit the student, it is quite possible to accommodate here together.
Change of scenery
The renovation was made for the future. Therefore, chair covers, bench mattresses, decorative pillows and items on shelves are easy to change. Moreover, the designer made an excellent background, he also painted the beams in a light color. This is a great advantage.
Beams - in business
As you know, students usually have a lot of books that need to be stored somewhere. Since the room is small, there are open shelves on the walls instead of bookcases. And the beams on the ceiling were used as a dividing partition. Since they are in the same color, it gives the impression of an extension of the shelves.
