Øresund Bridge is a unique crossing connecting the Danish capital Copenhagen with the Swedish city of Malmö. The bridge stretches for about 8 km and smoothly turns into an underwater tunnel about 4 km long. The project was designed by the Danish architect J. Rothn and officially opened on July 1, 2000. The beginning of the construction of the bridge-tunnel falls in 1995, construction work was completed in August 1999.
At the official opening ceremony of the crossing, Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark and Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden met symbolically in the middle of the bridge to mark its completion and thus further unite the two Scandinavian peoples. The bridge also served as a symbol of the union between Sweden and the rest of Europe at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest.
